No More Drama

The Egyptians can stop rioting, the Democrats can go back to Wisconsin and the entire country can exhale...the "Melo Drama" has finally come to a conclusion.  And not a moment too soon, unless you ask that rich Russian guy in Jersey...
New Jersey Nets Owner, Mikhail Prokhorov
(worth $22.7 billion, and he couldn't get a better suit?)
How could something so simple become as chaotic as a night at Charlie Sheen's? Going into this season former Nuggets forward, Carmelo Anthony, made his free agency plans clear. He had no interest staying in Denver and wanted to join Amare Stoudemire in New York. He also did not want to be traded in the middle of the 2010-11 season and become a rental player for 25 games.
So, if you're the New York Knicks this should be pretty simple right?...Not exactly. See that's because your neighbor, the New Jersey Nets, are owned by a Russian billionaire (Mikhail Prokhorov) who will do and pay whatever he has to in order to win games.
(Disclaimer) The next paragraph may never make sense...
The Nets try and work out a deal with Denver for Carmelo, and all of a sudden Anthony changes his tune quicker than Justin Bieber hitting puberty. He feels that the Nets want him more than the Knicks because they are showing interest. Anthony says he wouldn't have a problem going to New Jersey and signing an extension to play there long term or even staying in Denver.

Cameron Diaz feeding Alex Rodriguez popcorn at Super Bowl XLV
(no idea if it was buttered)

Not wanting New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez to be fed popcorn by Cameron Diaz at Nets games next season, the Knicks react and end up trading four players (including their starting point guard) and a first round draft pick for Anthony, Chauncey Billups and three other players.
This is like when you eat a bag of cookies an hour before dinner and when the five course meal is ready, you're too full and too sick to eat anything. Instead of being patient and waiting till free agency this summer, Melo forced the Knicks to trade away four players and a first round draft pick it could have kept... All so he could take his talents to Madison Square Garden before the season ended.
The most I've seen of Denver is the airport, but I can't imagine it's so bad that Carmelo would be this desperate to get out of town. I doubt he had a problem with the altitude, I hear the mountains are quite picturesque..Many locals have told me the best part of Denver is sharing the same air as former Broncos quarterback, John Elway, so that's another reason to stay. Perhaps it was the fear that soon he would be overshadowed by Timothy Richard Tebow? Whatever reason Melo had for leaving, I'm just happy Jim Gray didn't play a role in THIS "Decision"...

I'm not a Doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night...

On Sunday in the NFC, being the number six seed was a good thing…Wearing a number six jersey for the NFC North Champion Chicago Bears was….not a good thing.  A 21-14 loss at home to your archrival could be to blame, but a questionable knee injury that forces you to miss the second half and makes America learn how to pronounce Caleb Hanie is much more likely.  Fans have always had a love hate relationship with former Denver Broncos and current Bears quarterback, Jay Cutler.  Some have even anointed him the air apparent to Brett Favre, given his tendency to throw ill-advised interceptions NOT because he likes to send text messages or retire once a year….
But the message was clear Sunday afternoon, “If you can walk, you can play.”  Whether it was current or former players like Deion Sanders relentlessly questioning Cutler’s toughness on Twitter (Sanders missed nearly two years of his career battling a turf toe injury while Cutler lives and plays with Diabetes) or the nearly 13,000,000 Chicagoans that became licensed doctors on Sunday, to the delight of Cubs fans…Cutler had become the new GOAT in Chicago.

Cutler’s teammates defended him….
but without any medical tests to back Cutler’s claim of a serious injury the question remains, “How injured is too injured?”
During a 21-12 loss to the New England Patriots in the 2008 AFC Championship Game, San Diego Chargers star running back Ladanian Tomlinson sat on the sideline with a parka and helmet on due to a knee injury he suffered the week before against the Colts.  Tomlinson touched the ball three times (he had two carries for 5 yards and one reception for a yard).
This along with (age, declining performance, and delusional salary demands) led to his departure from San Diego...or maybe the Chargers let him go due to his MC Hammer imitation...

So, does Cutler face the same treatment in the Windy City?
Possibly.
It doesn’t seem that he has lost the locker room yet, but leaving the NFC Championship Game with discomfort in your knee is not the way to inspire teammates.  Sure Cutler may know his body better than anyone (except Kristin Cavallari, more on that soon), but this is the wrong time to sit out.

Swim class on a Monday, is a great time to have your mother forge a sick note to the P.E. coach.
“Dodgeball Thursday”, is another perfect time to have Dad forge a doctor’s signature regarding your ailing knee. Because even if Ben Stiller is on the other end, there is never a good time to get pelted in the face by a round red ball.

Surely we will learn more about Cutler’s injury as the day’s progress, but burning his jersey over this…really?

He didn’t take his talents to South Beach…..if there was ever a reason to burn his jersey…THIS is it…

Maybe Cutler just wanted to save himself for the "BIG GAME".....The Pro Bowl...

National Forecast League

As I sit in front of my heater on this 64 degree Los Angeles afternoon I can’t help but think about how much I missed my weekly installment of Faith Hill. Thanks to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Philadelphia mayor, Michael Nutter, I have to fight traffic on a Tuesday night and pray I get home in time to watch the country starlet sing the intro to NBC’s Sunday Night Football. That’s because the regular telecast on NBC was postponed. An unexpected blizzard that dropped around a foot of snow on Philadelphia is to blame (according to Goodell and Nutter). So, the Vikings and Eagles will play the first Tuesday night football game since Brett Favre was a 19 year old college kid….(October 1, 1946 when the New York Giants beat the Boston Yanks 17-0.)
Put the, “Brett Favre is old jokes” aside for a moment, and let’s take a closer look at this. The game was postponed early Sunday, before any snow had ACTUALLY fallen.
“Due to public safety concerns in light of today’s snow emergency in Philadelphia, tonight’s Vikings-Eagles game has been postponed. Because of the uncertainty of the extent of tonight’s storm and its aftermath, the game will be played on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. This will allow sufficient time to ensure that roads, parking lots and the stadium are fully cleared. The National Weather Service states that a winter storm warning in Philadelphia remains in effect until 1 pm on Monday,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.
Which, surprised me because I didn’t realize you had to have an AMS stamp of approval to work for the NFL…. this comes in the same season the Vikings have had two home games affected by weather. Their game against the Giants on Dec. 12 was postponed a day after Minneapolis got 15 inches of snow. It was then moved to Detroit when the Metrodome roof collapsed. Their game against Chicago the following week was played at the University of Minnesota’s outdoor stadium because of the damaged roof….
I understand fan safety is important, and as an Angelino that lived in the Midwest for four years I realize unplowed roads can be treacherous. But this seems like another instance of the league office flexing its muscle unnecessarily. And I’m not alone….
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, told KYW-TV he did "not at all" agree with the decision.
"This is football; football's played in bad weather," Rendell said. "I think the fans would have gotten there, the subways work and the major arteries are still open, and other fans would have stayed home — but you play football regardless of the weather."
The governor, who does football commentaries after Eagles games, also said the decision would be a "serious handicap" for the Eagles and was unfair to the team.
"I, for one, was looking forward to sitting in the stands throughout the snow and seeing an old-time football game," Rendell said.
Asked what Vince Lombardi would say about the decision, Rendell said "He'd be mocking us."
Suspending and fining players for “violent” hits is one thing, but playing the role of Al Roker is quite another. And if football has become a game that can only be played on Nike Field Turf and in a 70 degree Dome away from inclement weather….then explain to me again…
WHY LOS ANGELES DOESN’T HAVE A FOOTBALL TEAM?? (Forget about the Qualcomm Pond incident..San Diego is a 3 hour drive away)
Not that I think LA needs any more residents getting paid to play football (see USC) or would support a team (see Oakland/LA Raiders, St. Louis/LA Rams, UCLA Bruins). But we do have some pretty nice weather…..

What Sports Fans have to be Thankful For

Aside from trying to make up for not feeding the homeless for the first ten months of the year, Thanksgiving is also a time when Americans reflect on what they are thankful for.
These things can vary, from friends to family or just good credit, but what would the holiday be without sports?
So here is a list of what Sports fans have to be thankful for this year….

THE DETROIT LIONS
They make us all feel better about our performance in the annual Turkey Bowl.

JUST FOR MEN HAIR DYE-
Because without it no one would have any reason to fear the beard or know who Brian Wilson is for that matter..

THE TEXT MESSAGE FEATURE
Let’s face it, thanks to text messaging Elin Nordegren and Eva Longoria are single and now Jenn Sterger is relevant again…or at least her pictures are….OMG..LOL

NBA FREE AGENCY
Because now the possibility exists that when you change jobs or companies you can have your own primetime special to decide what to do…

SOUTH BEACH
That’s the furthest place Lebron could have taken his talents from me…aside from Toronto..

VINCE YOUNG
He proves there are worse things than being in your 20’s and having a baby face….by behaving like a baby..

ALEX RODRIGUEZ
Because the Yankees need AT LEAST one overpaid steroid user..

TERREL OWENS, CHAD OCHOCINCO ,THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS & DALLAS COWBOYS
They make any dysfunctional family look like the Brady Bunch..

TIM TEBOW
 BCS
Because it means college football never really ends….because if it did that would be ridiculous…I mean who uses a playoff system and has an undisputed champion at the end of the season?

BO PELINI
Shows that Mel Gibson may not be THAT crazy, and now I can watch, “What Women Want” again on TV..

 FOOTBALL HELMETS
Okay, so not everyone in the NFL knows how to use them without getting fined, but it’s an excuse not to have to look at Tom Brady’s hair or butt chin.

MICHAEL VICK
If he can get a second chance…we all can, (This is what O.J. Simpson is hanging on to right now)

DAVID ECKSTEIN
If he can call himself an athlete, then so can you…

NIKE PRO COMBAT COLLEGE FOOTBALL UNIFORMS
The only time your significant other can ask you, how they look, where you CAN answer, “bad”.

BRAD CHILDRESS
